The presence of women in the nautical sector

15 March 2024 Activities and Events

March is Women’s Month. Therefore, we wanted to dedicate this article to highlighting the presence of women in the Nautical Sector.

This field has been dominated by men for a long time.

Fortunately, with the evolution of the industry, women have been gaining ground. Both in roles related to navigation and sports, as well as in business management and technological innovation.

Participation of women in the nautical sector

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the last 5 years there has been a 15% increase in the number of women holding executive positions in companies related to the nautical sector. In addition, according to ANEN,

30% of these companies have at least one woman on their Board of Directors.

Within this panorama, Lucía Mingot, Director of Quality, Innovation, and Sustainability at Astilleros de Mallorca, is one of the great examples to follow. She has led key projects in the construction of sustainable vessels and has positioned the company as a reference in environmental responsibility.

On the other hand, Núria Güell, a naval engineer and founder of a boat design company, has been a pioneer in the creation of more efficient and ecological technologies for the nautical industry.

It is worth noting that women’s participation in sustainability initiatives has led to a 30% reduction in fuel consumption in some boat rental companies. Likewise, there has been a 25% increase in the use of recyclable materials in boat construction over the last five years.

Regarding their participation in nautical sports, women now represent 40% of those enrolled in sports such as sailing and surfing. In addition, the number of women enrolled in nautical training programs has increased by 20% in the last year.

Pending challenges and future opportunities

Despite significant advances, there are still challenges for women in the nautical sector.

Female representation in technical and leadership roles remains low compared to men. Gender stereotypes also persist.

However, these difficulties only highlight future opportunities to continue promoting gender equality and female empowerment in the nautical industry.
